Yugo . How to Change Gear Oil in a Moped / ScooterThis will assist you with changing the gear oil in your moped or scooter. Most people neglect to do this and burn up their drive system early when it is as easy as these simple steps. Difficulty:Moderately Easy Instructions Things You'll Need Moped Oil Socket set or adjustable wrench Oil collection pan or small container with wide mouth Step by Step : 1 The first step is to identify where the gear oil gets changed on your scooter. Most scooters put them in the same spot. Then we need to identify the bolts that hold the oil in your gear case. Look at the picture in step 2 to see what they look like. They are the odd looking bolts that don't hold the gear case closed. 2 Now we need to slide the oil pan under the bolts we found and start by unscrewing the top bolt(lefty loosie). Then we unscrew the bottom bolt. Once the bottom one is out the oil will drain out into the pan. 3 Now we need to inspect the oil to make sure it is not milky in color. If it is milky that means water is leaking in somewhere and this needs to be taken to a mechanic to reseal the gearbox. Assuming it is normal color start by screwing back in the bottom bolt. 4 Now we need to add the recommended oil back into the scooter. Make sure you add the type the owners manual specifies or the sticker states on the gear box. Start by squeezing the oil in the top bolt and keep filling until it starts running out the top bolt hole. Then screw the top bolt back into place. Wipe the area off and run the moped on the stand for about 5 minutes to make sure nothing is leaking and we are all set for another 1500 miles of fun! Tips & Warnings Sometimes the oil drain screw is on the bottom of the gear case like in the picture above, sometimes it is on the side USE ONLY THE MANUFACTURES RECOMMENDED OIL
Yugo . How to Change Gear Case Oil in Outboard MotorsAnnual maintenance of your outboard motor is important. One of the most important maintenance tasks is to drain and refill the lower unit, or gear case. Changing the gear case oil removes any water which might have gotten in and allows the oil to be examined for metal and other indicators of a potential problem. Difficulty:Moderately Easy Instructions Things You'll Need Large screwdriver Outboard motor lower unit oil Drain pan Step by Step : 1 Position the motor in the down position and place the drain pan under the lower unit. 2 Place a container under the motor to catch the old oil, then remove the lower unit drain screw, which is located on the bottom of the gear case "pod" at the base of the motor. 3 Remove the lower unit vent screw, located near the midpoint of the lower unit. 4 Refill the lower unit gear case by forcing oil through the drain screw hole until it comes out of the vent hole. Specialized pumps are available for this, but a plastic squeeze bottle with a tapered nozzle cap (such as from a ketchup dispenser bottle)works fine. Simply force the cap into the hole and squeeze the bottle, forcing the oil in. You may need a helper for this if your lower unit holds more than one bottle of oil. The helper can refill the bottle while you plug the hole. 5 Quickly replace the drain screw when the lower unit is full (oil comes out the vent hole). Tighten the screw firmly. 6 Inject oil in the vent hole to replace any oil that drained out while the screw was replaced. 7 Replace the vent screw and tighten securely. *The parts discussed thus far are common to most hydraulic brake systems. Now let's get to some of the major differences: When you press the brake pedal and force the brake fluid from the master cylinder into the brake lines, what happens next depends on the type of brakes you have. For many years, cars had drum brakes (shown in Figures 10-1 and 10-5) on all four wheels. .Chapter 10: It's the Brakes! 183 \ Jfc Dual brakes A dua/brake system simply means that the inside that's all that counts! Anti-lock brake systems (ABS) have also become popular. To confuse you completely, since 1963, most brakes are self-adjusting, but a couple of real oldies with manually adjusted brakes are still around. (Chapter 18 shows you diehards who still have manually adjusted brakes how to deal with them. You're lucky I'm a classic-car nut!) Your owner's manual can tell you what kind(s) of brakes you have on your vehicle, in case you don't already know, but seeing for yourself is more fun. The following sections cover each type of brakes in detail. Drum Brakes Drum brakes, shown in Figure 10-5, are the oldest type of brakes still on the road. Their main advantage is that they require less hydraulic pressure to stop your car, because the brake shoes tend to screw themselves into the brake drums after the pistons in the wheel cylinders push them there. Chapter 18 shows you how to open a drum brake and check its condition. The following sections get you acquainted with what's inside drum brakes and how they work. Part II: What Makes It Go?. Yugo . Wheel cylinder Retracting springs /I Backing late Brake shoes Brake drums Brake drums are hollow steel cylinders located in back of each wheel (refer to Figure 10-5). Because the lug bolts that go through them are the same as the ones that go through the wheels of your car, they turn when the wheels turn. If you keep your brakes in good condition and replace your brake linings before they become too worn, your brake drums should last for the life of your vehicle. If drums become worn, they can be "reground" or "turned" to a smooth surface — unless they are worn more than .060 of an inch. In that case, the drums must be replaced. Chapter 18 shows you how to inspect your brake drums and get a fair deal if they need work. Yugo . What time is race tonight?
